Charles Edwin Davis and Ruth Bachschmid wrote hundreds of letters to each other when they were driven apart by the events of World War II. Charlie first worked at a factory making military planes, then resigned and volunteered to become a pilot for the Army Air Corps. He flew cargo planes among South Pacific islands being liberated from Japanese invaders. Ruth stayed with her family in Austin, Texas, and kept working in several stores even after they married and he told her she could stop. Ruth was beautiful and high-energy and irritated Charlie by dating other men while he was gone. This is the story of their relationship during the war, based on their letters, most of which, though not all, are romantic, touching, and passionate.

James L. Davis is a retired journalist who lives in Austin, Texas. He also received two professional fellowships to write stories about Mexico and Central America. He is married to Jan Demetri, a Certified Public Accountant.
